These microscopic organisms do so much good, from breaking down fish waste in our aquaponics system to decomposing our food waste. We have been studying the various ways bacteria are beneficial, their characteristics, reproduction, growth requirements, and learning about sampling these organisms on multiple surfaces. The reason we are focused on bacteria is so we can best support the growth of nitrifying bacteria in our aquaponics system. Students started various experiments around colonizing bacteria. This week, we will look at our results and learn more about how effective the nitrifying bacteria are working in our aquaponics system through running tests on ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels.
