At the Davidson Farmers Market!🪴
We are entering one of my favorite times of the year… fall at the Farmers Market!
I love a fall morning at the market. The crisp air, the smell of fresh-brewed coffee and baked goods, and wandering around to find all the amazing homegrown produce that will fill my kitchen for the next week. There’s just something about it.
I also love that I get to share that experience with our students!
Over the last two weeks, students from every class have been involved in some way, shape, or form as we prepare for our first Farmers Market of the season. There has been a lot happening behind the scenes!
Students have sifted and bagged our worm castings, then finished each bag with a custom DGS ribbon made by one of our school families. They attached care instructions and made sure each bag was ready to go home with a customer.
Other students helped plant and pot more plants so we can have an even bigger selection at our future markets. Once they were ready, students added DGS stickers to each pot and got them ready for their new homes.
We even set up a faux Farmers Market right here at school! Students practiced taking inventory, talking with customers, making eye contact, exchanging money, and learning how to talk about the products we are selling. We also talked about what it means to be engaged at our booth and how we can create a space that makes people curious and excited to stop by.
Our Upper Elementary students will take on an even bigger role this year by tracking our expenses and profits throughout the season. They even helped complete our application for next year’s market!
What I love most about all of this is that the Farmers Market gives our students the opportunity to put their learning into action in a real-world setting. They are communicating with real customers, handling real money, caring for things they have grown, thinking about the work and resources that go into a product, and seeing the process from growing something to sharing it with their community.
I can't wait to see them put all of their practice into action this year!
