Lunasa and Our Very Own Constitution

This is the beginning of something special.  From the very first day of school, there was a wonderful energy in our Upper Elementary community.  We enjoyed welcoming new students and getting to know old friends in new ways.  There is a spark for learning already!

Last week, we reflected back to the first harvest, August 1st, known as Lunasa.  With its arrival between Summer Solstice and Autumn Equinox, we were provided the opportunity to discuss the seasons, as well as explore the globe.  We discussed lines of latitude and longitude along with the Equator and the Prime Meridian.  In the spirit of the season, we traced garden and nature shadows.  Some children chose to write inspired poetry or beautiful descriptions.  We also talked about harvest being a time to come together with kin, and while that usually means family, it can describe a special connection as well.  As with many gatherings, we celebrated with food and made our own soft pretzels.  With it being the start of school, we seized the opportunity to think about what we really wanted for ourselves this school year.  Did we want to improve in something, make new friends, be more patient…?  We designed our own name sigils.  They are secret symbols to represent our names.  Sitting quietly in circle, we cleared our minds and focused on our breathing.  Then we gazed at our sigils in an effort to manifest our wishes into reality.

With the upcoming election knocking on our door, discussing what is a constitution felt quite relevant.  As a matter of fact, everyone brainstormed in their journals what they would want in an Upper Elementary Class Constitution. After sharing ideas, we have our document, signed with our sigils.  Our discussion also included the formation of America, the displacement of the Indigenous Natives and the American Revolution.  These words, along with “amendment” became our spelling and vocabulary words this week.

Can’t wait to see where we sail next.
