Pickling Day

Dr. Montessori emphasized the importance of using real tools and engaging with purposeful activities. This fosters young people’s independence and shows that they are trusted to accomplish practical tasks. I remind myself of this as I brought out the knives for cutting dill pickle chips. 😊


Each child was focused and showed great responsibility with the task at hand. As we pickled cucumbers, we review the basics of food preservation with the focus on controlling bacterial growth through adjusting pH and using heat.

Hopefully, your children can teach you this classic method of food preservation. It is is a great way of eating local food year-round.
