Welcome Back, DGS Family!
We’ve had a fantastic first week back at school! The kids loved exploring the new forest playground and jumping into their specials classes.
This week in Sustainability, we tackled the topic of recycling right. It can be a bit confusing with all the changing rules, so it’s great to stay updated on what’s accepted in our area.
To make learning fun, we held a recycle relay race! In the first round, students sorted items based on what they already knew or guessed. Most items ended up in the right bins, which was awesome to see! After a quick lesson on proper sorting, they raced again and did even better. It was a great reminder for all of us to slow down and think about where things should go in our recycling or trash at home.
For those curious about Davidson’s curbside recycling, here’s what you need to know. And be sure to check out rules in your area, as they might be different from what we do at school.
In addition to recycling, we’re continuing our battery collection project! We’ll be collecting all used household batteries and taking them to a battery recycling center. Household batteries can’t go in curbside recycling and are hazardous in landfills, so this is a great way to keep them out of the trash. Students will track how many batteries we save from the landfill through this project!
Another important topic we covered this week was COMPOST!
If you've come through the car line, you may have seen our new 3-bin compost system, made by a former DGS student. Starting this week, you can drop off your household compost in the bin labeled “Open” during car line.
Students learned about what goes in our compost and will soon dive into a unit on the science behind it. Here’s a quick guide on what you can and can’t compost:
Please DO compost:
Fruit and vegetable scraps
Coffee grounds and tea bags (just remove the staples)
Crushed eggshells
Plant material (like flowers)
Bread
Please DO NOT compost:
Meat, bones, or dairy
Oils and fatty foods
Produce bags
Pet waste
We’re excited about these updated sustainability projects and hope you’ll join in! If you have any questions about recycling, composting, or battery collection, feel free to reach out.
Here’s to a great start to the school year!
-Ms. Emily
