Last week was quite the whirlwind. Noah’s family donated small pumpkins for the children to use, so we did pumpkin painting! A big “Thank You” goes to the Gilman family for their generosity! Friday especially was a fun and special day. It was my 50th birthday, and the children made it so special. I received so many wonderful cards with sweet words and gifts! I think teachers get the best birthdays! There is nothing more special than to read a sweet card created by a child just for you. The children insisted that I read the cards in front of them, and many allowed me to share what they wrote aloud with their classmates. Their sweet sincerity and genuine kindness are truly priceless.
Of course, it was also costume day at DGS, which always adds to the level of excitement. At the end of recess, the school came together for a little costume parade that was quite fun for everyone. Even the teachers got to show off their dancing skills. And as if that wasn’t enough fun for one week, the children got also got to have their first cooking lesson with Ms. Paula. The children got to make pumpkin muffins with chocolate chips, and I can personally attest that the outcome was delicious!
Believe it or not, though, these things were not even the highlight of our week. The work in the classroom has been nothing short of amazing! The magic of Montessori is that children’s interest drives the work. I may give presentations and lessons, but the children (for the most part) are in charge of when they repeat the presentations they are given. In addition, though sometimes I choose the presentations a child gets, often the child asks for lessons on what THEY are interested in. It’s a bit like witch’s brew… a bit of this and a whiff of that, and the results are never the same. This week, there was an explosion of math work, all at once! Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, at various levels, throughout the room. Ms. Paula captioned it “math for miles”.
It’s always interesting and a mystery what work will catch fire next? I’m guessing grammar is a possibility! I’ll keep you posted!
