Well we're back and how wonderful it was to see all their little faces and get back into a routine! It sounds like everyone had a lovely winter break but are now ready for work! In some ways it felt like August.....reminders of how to sit on circle, wait your turn to talk,remembering our 'inside voices' (what are those???) but by Friday those reminders were beginning to resonate with them. You can help with reminding them to use their peaceful voices at home too!!
On the other hand, when I see the quality of work that the children are doing it reminds ME that we are not in August!!! One of my observations this week is that children like constant validation, they want to know that what they are doing is right and are used to asking and receiving help. Something that we can all help with is encouraging them to work more on the process rather than product.....so what happens if it doesn't' turn out right? We can either do it again or try again next time. Constant reassurance doesn't lead to independent work or pride in their work, rather it leads to the need for someone to tell them constantly that they are doing okay. We would prefer to guide them, let them grow in confidence by trying and failing and trying again and succeeding. That is something we are encouraging in the classroom and something you can encourage at home also.
Our greatest goal if for a child to make their own discoveries whatever they may be and discover the joy in their discovery.
Many new works are on the shelves right now including baby washing, coffee grinding, nutmeg and cilantro grinding. (The smells are divine). Soap grating and bubble making are also popular! Kindergarten have been introduced to the continent of North America, some of the places and animals native to our continent. This is a wonderful time of year for learning and when the children begin to visit for next year, it reminds us of how far our children have come and we are grateful!!!!
Upcoming events to look forward to are curriculum day next Friday and conferences coming up on the 24th, 25th and 26th.
