At Davidson Green School, our mindfulness practice isn’t just about slowing down; it’s about helping children discover who they truly are at their core. Over the next couple of weeks, our community is focusing on self-belonging, a way of connecting with an inner sense of home that isn’t dependent on achievements, appearances, or circumstances.
The 8 C’s of the Wise Self
This week, students were introduced to a beautiful framework from Internal Family Systems (IFS): the 8 C’s of the Wise Self: Calm, Clarity, Compassion, Confidence, Courage, Creativity, Connectedness, and Curiosity.
These qualities remind us that we each carry an inner compass. They are not skills to be learned but gifts already within us. When children begin to notice and lean into these qualities, they cultivate a strong sense of self-belonging, an anchor they can return to in any situation.
How Families Can Explore This at Home
Parents often ask, “How can we bring mindfulness into daily life?”
Here are a few simple ways to explore the 8 C’s together:
Mindfulness Moments: Take a pause together and ask, Which of the 8 C’s do I feel right now? Calm? Curiosity? Confidence?
Storytelling & Conversation: Share a family story or memory that highlights one of these qualities. Ask your child, When have you felt most courageous? What helps you feel connected?
Body Awareness: Invite your child to notice how a quality feels in the body. For example, What does confidence feel like in your chest? What does compassion feel like in your hands?
Why It Matters
When children practice seeing these qualities in themselves, they begin to trust that they belong, not because of what they do, but because of who they are. This inner belonging nurtures resilience, compassion, and confidence, not only in school but in every part of life.
We invite you to weave these practices into your routines in whatever way feels natural for your family. Whether it’s a dinner-table conversation, a quiet bedtime reflection, or a shared art project, each moment strengthens the sense of self-belonging that helps our children flourish.
