Tales from the Loft

Writer: Patricia HatchPatricia Hatch

Hello Dear Readers,

Middle school has been incredibly busy these past few weeks! We:

  • attended a showing of Landfill Harmonic at The Independent Picture House.

  • dined at Seventh Street Market

  • designed company board games addressing energy usage and B-Corp status. The games provided a learning opportunity....the companies were real.

  • listened to Frederick Douglass's speech, "What to a Slave Is the Fourth of July?"

  • created a timeline of important events and people from 1800 - 1860

  • watched a Civil War documentary and took notes

  • garnered awareness of the Dakota Exile that happened alongside the Emancipation Proclamation

  • presented at the DGS Curriculum Fair

  • discussed the Gettysburg Address

  • read a novel (Hound of the Baskervilles or Evolution of Calpurnia Tate)

  • viewed exhibits at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

  • played at Museum of Illusions

  • picnicked at the Green

  • hosted a Coffee Cafe

  • planned a Kids' Night Out

  • served pizza

We could probably keep going on this list, but instead, I'll just share a few pictures. It's been a fantastic start to the second semester!

In the paintings below, each student created a story for their chosen piece of artwork. They each picked a painting to sit with during a silent reflection time, and then we shared where our imaginations took us.
