Upper Elementary - Math in Action

ree

When I took my training for Montessori education I felt like I understood math for the very first time. I had always memorized the steps to solve the problems when I was a kid, but I didn't really understand the "why" behind that memorization.

In our class, math takes on many forms. There is daily math fact practice with games and activities, lesson work with materials, 3-part cards and materials for geometry concepts, workbooks, and games to inspire mathematical thinking. We can't overlook all the opportunities that arise when we are doing our weekly cooking - measurement and fractions. It's truly a gift to be able to guide each child as an individual. Some concepts come with ease and others take more time to go from the use of concrete materials to abract understanding. It's wonderful to also see the students collaborate and problem solve together.

In the following pictures, you'll see our practices in action.
