April is National Poetry Month, and each year this brings an invitation to honor language, imagination, rhythm, and the poets whose words help us see the world in new ways. In Lower Elementary, we mark this special month with one of our favorite annual traditions: Poet’s Café.
Poetry is often one of the earliest ways children fall in love with language. Long before many children read chapter books, they delight in nursery rhymes, songs, riddles, and playful verse. Poetry invites children into reading through rhythm, repetition, humor, and imagination.
Throughout the month, our students explored poetry in many forms. They listened to poems, studied favorite poets, noticed rhyme and imagery, and discussed how just a few carefully chosen words can express a big feeling or vivid idea. Some students selected beloved poems to memorize and perform, while others wrote original pieces of their own.
The culmination of this work was our annual Poet’s Café, a cozy afternoon event where students gathered to share their chosen or original poems with classmates.
One of the most meaningful parts of Poet’s Café is that our 3rd graders take the lead in planning the event. In true Montessori fashion, this transforms a celebration into rich real-world learning.
Students practiced:
• Practical life skills through event planning and hosting
• Collaboration by listening to one another’s ideas and making group decisions
• Executive function skills by managing time, prioritizing tasks, and organizing materials
• Leadership by helping create an inviting experience for the whole class
They asked thoughtful questions such as:
• How much time do we have to prepare?
• What matters most to our group?
• What can we realistically accomplish together?
• How do we make sure everyone feels included?
These are powerful life skills disguised as party planning.
And of course, the poetry itself was wonderful. Students stood proudly to recite funny poems, thoughtful poems, rhythmic poems, heartfelt poems, and imaginative original works. Some made us laugh, some made us think, and all reminded us that children have meaningful voices worth hearing.
We are so proud of all of our students for their courage, creativity, preparation, and joyful participation. A special round of applause goes to our 3rd graders for planning such a lovely event for the community.

Happy National Poetry Month from Lower Elementary! ✨📖☕
