Sustainability at a Glance

Christmas in Davidson Edition

Phew! It's been quite a busy season here at school! Between all the classes creating their own plays and participating in Christmas in Davidson, we've had our hands full. I hope you all can join us this Thursday to see the students showcase their fabulous performances!

I wanted to take a moment to highlight Christmas in Davidson and the wonderful experience of having our students involved in such a fantastic community event. From December 5th to 7th, the Town of Davidson hosted its annual Christmas in Davidson festivities. It’s always a time filled with lights, food, and fun. But with all the excitement, there's also a lot of waste generated.

This year, our school decided to switch things up with our booth. Instead of offering reindeer food or seed balls, we created a recycling scavenger hunt. Our goal was to encourage event-goers to recycle, and to educate them on the proper recycling practices here in Mecklenburg County. And what better way to teach recycling than with the help of our expert students? We had students of all ages out there pitching in!

Thanks to their hard work, we were able to divert 192 gallons of recyclables from the landfill at our booth alone!

But that wasn’t all! Our middle schoolers were selected by the Town of Davidson to serve as recycling ambassadors on Thursday night. These students went above and beyond by circulating through the event, helping to ensure trash and recycling were sorted correctly. If the recycling is contaminated, the whole bin has to be sent to the trash, which is why their role was so important. They did an amazing job, and we are so proud of them!

A big thank you to everyone who helped out at our booth and as recycling ambassadors. With your efforts, our DGS students are truly making a positive impact and proving that they are change-makers in our community!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!
