Welcome Back to Lower Elementary!

What a joyful first week we've had in Lower Elementary! There is something truly special about the beginning of a new school year. Every routine, every friendship, and every lesson is an opportunity to build the strong foundation that will support our learning community for months to come.

Although it may have looked like we were simply learning "how to do school," these first two days have been incredibly full. In fact, we've already explored more than 30 Practical Life lessons and introduced more than a dozen Social Emotional Learning concepts! In Montessori, these lessons are just as important as reading, writing, and math — they help children develop a foundation of independence, confidence, self-regulation, and respect for one another.

Our first day began with a beautiful opening ceremony led by Ms. Kathleen centered on the theme of love, setting the tone for the year ahead. From there, we began learning the rhythms of our classroom together: how to gather for group lessons, ask thoughtful questions, collaborate with classmates, choose books from our library, care for classroom materials, walk peacefully through the school, organize our belongings, enjoy snack and lunch together, and end each work cycle by leaving the environment ready for the next person.

One of my favorite ideas from the week was that calmness is contagious. Just like a smile or a laugh can spread from person to person, so can peacefulness. As we practice slowing our bodies, using kind voices, and making thoughtful choices, we help create a classroom where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and ready to learn.

Of course, there was plenty of fun mixed in, too! The obstacle course and playground slide quickly became favorites, and we shared a wonderful story about animal friendships that sparked conversations about what to do when a friend makes choices that don't feel right. Rather than simply telling others what not to do, we talked about how we can become positive examples by showing what kindness, respect, and courage look like in action.

We also spent lots of time outdoors, making friends with our beautiful campus and noticing the incredible world around us. The children delighted in spotting fascinating insects, interesting leaves, frogs in the creek, and all kinds of tiny discoveries that reminded us how much there is to observe when we slow down and pay attention.

One especially heartwarming moment came when some of our second graders revisited a tree they had planted as tiny acorns back in their Primary days. They could hardly believe how tall it had grown over the past year! Inspired by seeing the impact of their care and patience, they immediately decided it was time to continue the tradition. Together, they planted four more acorns, carefully collected water from the creek to give them a good start, and proudly imagined the day future students will return to find their trees reaching toward the sky. It was a beautiful reminder that caring for the environment, and for the future, is something that begins with small, hopeful actions.

On Friday, we celebrated our first two Sun Celebrations of the year, honoring Jackie and Conrad's birthdays Montessori-style. With each journey around our "sun," we reflected on each year of their lives, shared happy memories, and practiced offering sincere compliments and appreciation to our birthday friends.

One of the greatest joys of Montessori is watching children make purposeful choices. Given the freedom to select their work on Friday, our students spent time building puzzles, practicing drawing, reading books, coloring, designing cities, engineering Roman arches, mapping our playground, exploring the puzzle maps of Europe and Asia (including the exciting discovery that Russia appears on both!), writing in journals, creating heartfelt cards for loved ones, and diving into individualized math and language practice. Depending on where they are in their learning journey, some students practiced phonics and writing their names while others dove into elaborate recaps of our first days in their journals. Some worked on math facts, some explored dynamic addition with regrouping, while others challenged themselves by building numbers well into the millions using the Montessori multiplication checkerboard.

We couldn't have scripted a more memorable ending to our first week. As dismissal approached on Friday, an unexpected thunderstorm rolled in, inspiring an impromptu dance party on the Primary porch. There was singing, laughing, dancing in the summer rain, and even a spirited game of charades with Ms. Jennifer and our Primary friends while families arrived.

If the first two days are any indication, this is going to be a year filled with curiosity, kindness, joyful discovery, and plenty of unforgettable moments. We can't wait to see where our adventures take us next.
