Adventures in Lower Elementary: Learning Sustainability in Action

Happy Earth Day from Lower Elementary! 🌎💚

Today feels like the perfect time to reflect on our wonderful field trip last Friday to the Whitewater Center, where we spent the day learning, exploring, and celebrating the natural world together.

One of the highlights of the day was time spent in the forest playground, where the children climbed, created, collaborated, and enjoyed the simple joy of being outdoors with one another. Watching children play freely in nature is always a beautiful reminder that connection to the environment begins with appreciation and wonder.

We also participated in an excellent class called Solutions to Pollution, where students explored real-world environmental challenges through hands-on learning and problem-solving.

Together, we built a decomposition timeline, sorting materials by how long they take to break down in nature. Some items decompose quickly, while others remain for hundreds of years (yes… even diapers can stick around for 500+ years!). This activity helped students visualize the long-term impact of the choices we make as consumers.

The children also took part in a water-cleaning lab, experimenting with different ways to filter used water and make it safer for wildlife. Perhaps the most important takeaway was this: there was no single “right” answer. Instead, students discovered that meaningful problems often require creativity, teamwork, experimentation, and a combination of solutions.

That spirit of inquiry is at the heart of both Montessori education and environmental stewardship. We hope these experiences inspire continued conversations at home about caring for our planet and thinking creatively about the future.

Wishing all of our families a joyful and meaningful Earth Day! 🌱♻️🌍
