What are we up to in September?
In September, we are covering Senses, Land, Air, and Water; the Map of the World; Living and Non-Living; Apples; and Emotions. In Practical Life, we are sweeping, polishing, and arranging silk flowers. In Art, we have been cutting, rubbing, and pasting. Our Peace Shelf has several items to help us calm ourselves, including a sand timer to watch and a book about peace where we can practice our sign language.
Sensorial
We are exploring our senses using pictures and real-life items. We use a sand timer to explore our sense of sight, a music box for hearing, a rough piece of fabric for touch, rosemary for smell, and mint leaves for taste. We have found that sometimes we use more than one sense, like when we kick a ball or eat our snack.

Geography
We explored Land, Air, and Water using our sandpaper globe as well as pictures and objects. We collected air, land, and water in our demonstration jars to use for the year. We made a book about land, air, and water.
The Map of the World is open. We used our Colorful Globe to explore our continents. Our Continents Song helps us recall the names as we finish continent work or jump from continent to continent on our rug. The song says, "Tell me the continents, tell me the continents, tell me if you can. North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, don't forget Australia, don't forget Antarctica. Tell me the continents, tell me the continents, tell me if you can."
Emotions happen all the time. We feel all kinds of emotions. We named them and acted them out to see how we look when we express them. We have a work on the shelf where we can look in a mirror and create the emotions we see in the pictures. This is fun and helpful when we are feeling big emotions: happy or sad. Being able to name the emotions we feel is a great start to talking about our feelings.
Science
In Science, we kick off our study with Living and Non-Living. We know that living things need food, water, and sunlight. If it is an animal, it will grow and move on its own. Plants also grow and change. Plants are living things too. These lessons, using objects and pictures, help us protect our environment and care for living things. They also lead to our study of apples. We are naming, polishing, and looking at the life cycle and parts of apples.
Practical Life and Art
As we care for our classroom environment and practice using all sorts of tools, we build our independence, concentration, and confidence. It may seem like we are simply sweeping the floor, but secretly we are building ourselves. Through work, we are becoming ourselves!
Language
Each one of us is on our own language journey.
Math
In math, we work at our own pace. Some of us are working on the Numeration Shelf, while others are working through the Decimal Shelf. We all opened the Decimal Shelf this week by walking the unit, the ten bar, the hundred square, the thousand cube, and finally the whole Decimal Tray.
Each day we walked a part of our Decimal Tray, starting with walking the unit on Monday, the ten bar on Tuesday, the hundred square on Wednesday, the thousand cube on Thursday, and the Decimal Tray on Friday. The Decimal Shelf is OPEN!
